Raising Backyard Chickens as business:

While most people would raise backyard chickens as some form of hobby or pleasurable activity, there are actually some who would do so for purely business reasons. Perhaps spurred on by the economic crisis, these people are looking to be able to turn a profit by raising these chickens in their backyards.

This is actually a pretty good idea, as raising backyard chickens can really help you earn an extra income provided that you do it well enough. This is of course easier said than done as you would defninitely encounter some issues while trying to raise your birds.

To be able to help out people who want to raise backyard chickens as a business, here is a list of some things that you should keep in mind:

Check local laws:

The first thing that you would have to do would be to check local laws regarding raising backyard chickens. You should understand that there might be some rules or regulations in place that may limit your ability to raise backyard chickens as a business.

An example of this would be laws regarding the number of roosters that you can keep. There are plenty of local laws that prohibit having roosters and this may force you to just have an egg laying flock instead of having one set up for meat birds.

Another common law would be about selling the chickens or the eggs. You should first check if there are some laws that may prohibit you from doing so, so that you would be able to avoid fines or even lawsuits.

Choose what type:

After checking with the local authorities regarding the rules and regulations of raising backyard chickens, the next step would be to determine what kind of chicken you would want to raise in your backyard. You would have to decide whether you would focus on meat birds or if you would rather have egg layers. Of course, you may even raise both kinds if you think you have the resources for doing so.

Keep in mind that meat birds would usually take a bit longer before you start selling as compared to egg laying. This is of course caused by the fact that you would have to wait until your chickens would grow before you would be able to sell them off. You may also have to set aside some money for more equipment for removing the feathers and dressing the chicken.

Raising egg laying chickens on the other hand may be quicker and simpler than for meat birds but is offset by the lower profit that you would be able to gain from it.

Compare Prices:

Lastly, you should compare prices with that of the local grocery or market. After all, with all things being equal, people would usually choose the cheaper option when it comes to eggs or chickens. That’s why you should see if you can match the prices that markets are offering without being put in the red.

Of course, you should remember that you should factor in all of your spending (feeds, equipment costs, labor) when you are selling your products.

If you are planning on raising backyard chickens, then one of the things that you should learn to do or start doing would be to keep a journal of your adventures with them. The purpose of this is quite simple; it would enable you to easily track the progress of all the birds in your flock.

Keeping a journal would be easy, you can just get a notebook and list down the things that are happening to your flock day by day. You could even use a computer programs such as word processors or even spreadsheets, if you would really want to automate your backyard chicken operations.

Of course, maintaining a journal would be quite useless if you did not know the proper things to track while raising backyard chickens. That is why here is a short list of the things that you should note down if ever you are keeping a journal of raising backyard chickens:

Regular Behavior:

You should try to keep track of the regular behavior of the backyard chickens that you are raising. This means that you should try to jot down notes as to how they would regularly act, the places in the coop that they would usually frequent, their interaction with the other chickens in the coop, and even their feeding schedules.

You would need to do this so that you would be able to have a reference point when changes to their usual daily patterns happen. This is because as any person who is raising backyard chickens would tell you, chickens would usually do things routinely.

An observable change or break in the pattern may mean that something is wrong and could be a cause for further investigation.

Their productivity:

Another thing that one should note on the journal used for raising backyard chickens would be their productivity levels.  You should try to list down just how many eggs they are laying per day or per week so that you can see if there are spikes or valleys in their productivity levels as the time goes by.

By jotting these down, you could use their productivity as indicators as to whether something is wrong with them or whether there are some problems with the coop that need to be fixed. Of course, a drop in productivity would not automatically mean that something is wrong.

Yes, maintaining a journal for raising backyard chickens may be a tedious task for some. However, you would be pleased to know that doing so would definitely help you raise your flock better as you would be able to make adjustments easily when you see that there are a few changes in the comfortable patterns that your chickens would usually have.

Cleaning the Chicken Eggs:

small chicken egg 300x164 Cleaning the Chicken Eggs:While not necessarily harmful, one of the common causes of uneasiness among those that are raising backyard chickens are the outside cleanliness of the chicken eggs. When they look at the egg in the nesting boxes, they see the outside having some specs of dirt and would immediately want to clean them off.

However, they are scared that by cleaning the eggs, it may lead to some issues and even damage it and make it unsuitable for eating. That’s why many people who raise backyard chickens are wondering on how to properly clean their chicken eggs. To understand how to clean the chicken eggs, it would be important to first understand why it gets dirty in the first place. This would enable you to understand better how to clean it.

Usually, when the hens are laying their eggs, there are some speckles of fecal matter on it; this is one of the primary causes of the “dirt” that we are accustomed to seeing on the eggs. Another reason for dirt on the eggs would be the nesting material that you use. If you don’t regularly clean or replace the nesting box material, then you can expect the dirt to build up and accumulate on the uncollected eggs.

Now that you know where the dirt comes from, here are some of the things that you can do to clean the eggs of your backyard chickens:

Scrape off the Manure:

You can try using a small sharp object, a knife to scrape off the dirt found on the egg shells. However you must remember to be as gentle as possible in order to avoid breaking the shell and wasting the egg.

Remember that you should not add unnecessary pressure as you are risking puncturing the egg shell. You may event want to use plastic knives to really ensure that you won’t damage the shell while cleaning the eggs.

You should just scrape around the entire egg in order to try to remove the spots of manure that can usually appear on the shells of the eggs of your backyard chickens.

Cleaning the Nesting Boxes:

Another way to ensure the cleanliness of the egg (at least in its exterior) would be to regularly replace the nesting material of your nesting boxes. If your material is dirty, then you can expect that the eggs that are laid on top of that nesting material would have some of the dirt and dust as well.

You must ensure that you would replace the nesting material after some time, and collect the eggs as soon as possible so that you can avoid dirt from the nesting box to get onto the egg.

A note on washing the Eggs:

Some people think that scarping off the dirt and even cleaning the nesting boxes are still not enough to clean the eggs laid by their backyard chickens. They would then proceed to go to the sink and wash the eggs to ensure their cleanliness.

This is actually not advisable as washing the eggs can create some micro punctures in the shell which could damage the egg inside. Agricultural experts say that if you want to wash the eggs you must do so with water that is set at the proper temperature.

If you think that you would not be able to do this, then it may be wise to avoid washing them.
