One of the least understood benefits of raising backyard chickens is the positive lessons that it can provide to the household who owns them. This is especially true if there are plenty of children who belong to the house. Raising chickens in the backyard would give them a variety of unique lessons that they may not be able to learn if you have raised other pets instead.

Of course, the lessons would not manifest themselves if you do not point them out to your children at first. Because of the uniqueness of the lessons, they would not be able to immediately know what to look for when you are trying to use the chickens in your backyard as a way for them to learn.

Here are some of the things that you can point out to your children so that they would learn unique lessons from raising backyard chickens.

Responsibility:

Of course, the first thing that your children should learn when having backyard chickens would responsibility. If you care for your chickens well, then you would be able to make your chickens survive and then be able to provide you with the benefits that you want.

You should also point out the negatives that could happen if children become irresponsible with their duties. For example, you can point out how pests could gather if you are not responsible enough to clean your chicken coop, or to secure your food storage.

Food chains:

You can also point out the food cycle to the children by using the chickens that you are raising in the backyard. You can plant corn and feed them to chickens, to show how the chickens eat the grains, or food which they would then use to grow and lay the eggs. You would then explain how people would benefit from eating these eggs.

Of course, you should be a bit reserved when handling the topic of food chains when it comes to your children. While you may point out how the eggs that you are eating came from the chickens in your coop, it might be a bit extreme if you would suddenly serve them their favorite chicken from the coop!

Being Green (Environmentally Conscious):

Lastly, you can also teach the children about being green or environmentally conscious through raising chickens in your backyard. You can do this in two ways:

The first would be to eat to show how you are trying to keep harmful chemicals away from your chickens. You can explain to your children that the harmful chemicals are dangerous to your flock and could kill them.

Another way would be to use the manure or chicken droppings that you would definitely encounter when raising backyard chickens in your compost heaps and as fertilizer. This would show children that you can use natural means in order to better your life.

When people start raising backyard chickens, there are usually two ways to go about it. Some would already purchase adults so that they could hasten the process, while some people would prefer to take care of the chicks. You should understand that taking care of chicks is a vastly different experience than taking care of adults.

I say different because there are a lot of things that you would have to do that are quite varied when comparing these chicks to the adults. While they may be a bit complex for some, they do provide a different sense of enjoyment than just simply raising adult backyard chickens.

Here are some of the things that you must do when you are taking care of chicks for your backyard chicken flock:

Motherly Activities:

When it comes to raising chicks, you should be able to do the activities that are usually done by the mother hens. This means you should be able to simulate brooding them (providing them with enough heat) and of course feeding them.

When trying to brood your chicks, it would be important for you to get a good brooder. A good brooder would be able to provide your chicks with adequate heat without getting too extreme. You should be able to purchase an already built one at the local pet supply store, or you could just build your own.

Building your own would usually entail getting a good lamp, a thermometer, and an area where the chicks would be placed. You can also find various brooder plans all over the internet.

On the other hand, feeding them is a bit easier. You would just have to purchase feeds that are specifically made for chicks. These feed are specially formulated so that they would provide the nutrients that are necessary for your chicks to grow well.

Determining their sex:

One of the problems with having chicks is that you do not know if your chickens are either roosters or hens. This becomes problematic since there are many states or cities that would not allow you to take care of roosters.

As such, you must be able to detect at an early age whether the chicks that you currently have are males or females. This is done because you would not want to waste your money and efforts in taking care of a chick only to find out that you would have to cull it in the future because it is a rooster.

Yes, taking care of chicks can be quite different from taking care of chickens that are already adults. However, it is a wonderful experience to see them grow, and should become one that all people who raise backyards chickens should at least try!

Hens Understanding the needs of your chickens is the key to great chicken coop design:If you want to be able to raise backyard chickens that are well enough to provide you with all the benefits that you would expect of them, such as eggs, meat, or even just as good pets, then one of your first requirements would be to provide them with a good chicken coop.

Of course, not everyone is familiar with what exactly makes a good chicken coop. This is especially true for those beginners who are still getting their feet wet about raising chickens in their backyard. They just build or purchase chicken coops without really regarding those that would actually be using it.

To be able to build good coops for your backyard chickens it is very important to understand their needs. By being able to understand and cater to their needs, you would be able to ensure that they would be comfortable inside your coop.

Some of their needs that you would have to serve would include:

Proper Temperature:

Your chicken coop cannot be too hot or too cold. There is a certain temperature and humidity level that would enable your chickens to live comfortably inside the coop that you have made or bought.

That is why you should be aware of the temperature level of your environment as well as how the coop would be able to affect it. This means that the materials that you use for building the coop must be able to help in increasing ventilation to make it cooler for hot or warm environments or insulate heat enough to provide warmth in cold or wintry situations.

You should also design your coop to have provisions for adjusting the temperature to match the changes in the weather. This may mean including hooks to hang vinyl sheets for additional warmth or adding windows for wind circulation.

Space:

When designing your chicken coop, you must be aware that they would need some space. If you force the chickens to live in tight and cramped spaces, then you are risking that they would be fighting amongst each other and may become moody and not lay their eggs.

You would need to be able to design a coop that has space that can accommodate your number of chickens. Ideally, you would be able to give at least 4 square feet per chicken that you plan to put inside the coop. So if you have 4 chickens then you should have a coop with an area of at least 16 square feet.

Equipment for their purpose:

Lastly, you should realize that your chickens would be better able to serve you if you provide them with the necessary equipment to cater to their functions or purpose.

For example, if an egg laying flock is the main purpose of raising chickens in your backyard, then you must be able to set comfortable nesting boxes for them to lay their eggs in.

Again, by understanding the needs of your chickens, you would be able to build a chicken coop that would be adequate and good for your chickens.
